Oliver Grace
I'm a Bristol - based studio engineer, producer and mixer, with a focus on live music and analogue recording. As a multi-instrumentalist, I have a keen knowledge of how each section of a band works, and use this insight to capture performances accurately and efficiently. Recording should be a smooth process, and I strive to be easy to work with, and not let anything get in the way of a great performance.
Efficiency - Time is never on your side in the studio, so I take pride in working efficiently to make sessions as productive as possible. Whether that be through detailed session plans or simply making sure equipment is up to spec and ready to go, I always aim to maximise the amount of time spent actually recording.
Context - Each session is unique, and there's no blanket solution to get the appropriate sound for a track. Genre, tone, emotion and time period play a huge role in microphone choice, placement, and processing, as well as how a session is ran. Some genres suit live tracking well, others rely more on overdubbing for a particular sound - it's all about context.
Experimentation - Sometimes finding the right sound might require unusual methods - I'm always open to try new ways to capture the sound an artist has in mind. I have an interest in using space in recordings, so will often experiment with a range of room microphones.
Accuracy - My ultimate goal is to capture the best version of a performance. Even if I'm working in a genre I'm not familiar with or don't understand, I will always respect artistic choices and accurately translate them to a recording.
